Cuyahoga Valley National Park provides a breath of fresh air -- 33,000 acres worth -- just a short distance from Cleveland and Akron, Ohio.The park also protects 22 miles of the Cuyahoga River.It infamously caught fire due to an oil slick from industrial waste in June 1969, and the river caught fire at least 10 other times in the previous century, according to the National Park Service.But it was the 1969 fire that provided a catalyst for environmental improvements. Five years later, in 1974, Cuyahoga Valley National Park was established.The park is home to more than 900 types of plants, 194 species of birds and numerous other wildlife.There's a scenic hours long train ride visitors can take seasonally, providing passengers an opportunity to sit back and take in the flora, fauna and animals in their natural habitat.Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is a not-for-profit organization that operates in partnership with the national park.Cuyahoga Valley National Park has more than 2.2 million visitors a year.
