ANCHOR CHRISTINE PAE TELLS US ABOUT THE TEST THAT ISN’T NEW AT ALL. CHRISTINE: DOUG, THE SATS WILL NOW BE THE OFFICIAL HIGH SCHOOL ASSESSMENT. IT WILL BASICALLY REPLACE PARCC TESTING THAT THE GOVERNOR GOT RID OF EARLIER THIS YEAR. FEDERAL GUIDELINES REQUIRE STATES TO TEST HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FOR READING AND MATH AT LEAST ONCE. PUBLIC EDUCATION SECRETARY RYAN STEWART ANNOUNCED THE SATS WILL BE THE TEST TO FILL THAT REQUIREMENT. THE GOOD NEWS IS THE SAT IS NOW FREE FOR STUDENTS TO TAKE, SINCE IT WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE STATE. THAT MEANS EVERY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO TAKE THE ENTRANCE TEST FOR COLLEGE. PED POINTS OUT MANY STUDENTS IN NEW MEXICO ARE FAMILIAR WITH IT AND ARE ALREADY PREPPING FOR THE SAT, WITH NEARLY 20,000 SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS HAVING TAKEN THE PSATS LAST YEA THE COLLEGE BOARD, A NON-PROFIT, ADMINISTERS THE SAT. SCHOOL DISTRICTS WILL HAVE AN OPTION OF TESTING STUDENTS AT THEIR SCHOOL DURING A REGULAR SCHOOL DAY VERSUS A WEEKEND DAY. CHRISTINE PAE, KOAT ACTION 7
