Reporter chugging coffee in the audience becomes unintended star of the impeachment hearings
A reporter who was captured in the background during the U.S. House's public impeachment hearing became an accidental star after she was seen emphatically chugging coffee during testimony on Tuesday.
It was McClatchy congressional reporter Emma Dumain, who was drinking her coffee down to the last drop, Slate reported.
She could be seen tipping her coffee cup up to her mouth behind Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the National Security Council official and decorated Army officer who testified at the hearing Tuesday.
Dumain told the news website that while she knew she was within the range of the live shot, she said she wasn't "conscious of it the whole time."
"I also didn’t figure that the camera was going to be trained on the witnesses for the entirety of the hearing," she told Slate. "The bottom line is, I had no idea in the moment that that was being captured in real time. Zero."
She said she was trying to make the most of her first cup of coffee for the day after a "disorienting" morning with her 19-month-old daughter, since she usually drinks her first cup much earlier in the day.
"I want to put out there: I’m just a tired workin’ mom trying to do it all," she said.
