'It was spur of the moment': 11 in California office pool claim $543M Mega Millions winnings

Eleven co-workers in California will be sharing the massive $543 million Mega Millions jackpot, which is the largest prize amount in state lottery history.

Each employee contributed $2 to the office pool, Roland Reyes told the California Lottery, who claimed the winnings on behalf of his office pool on Friday.

“It was spur of the moment. ‘Hey, did you hear about the jackpot? We should play,’” Reyes said.

The group works in the financial industry somewhere in Santa Clara County, where the city of San Jose is located.

The winners range in age from 21 to 60.

Even with their recent windfall, the group plans to keep working.

“We want to keep our jobs,” Reyes said. “We love that company. We love what we’ve built there. We have a good time and want to stay together.”

They have the option of receiving the $543 million in payments over 30 years, or taking a lump sum of $320.5 million.
